Rugby

You are here

Whether you are into rugby union or rugby league, there are a number of opportunities to participate in the sport around Sheffield and it is a great way of getting out, meeting new people and trying a new sport. Sheffield finds itself located on the border of union and league with most towns and cities just to the south playing union and teams to the north and west playing league. Sheffield did have its own rugby league side for a short period when they team up with what is now the Huddersfield Giants, however the sport never really gathered momentum in the city.

Rugby has a great social scene and is a great sport to play as you really feel part of a team.

Health benefits

Rugby is one of the best sports for improving all aspects of your health and fitness.  As you would imagine, it’s a sport played in either code that requires physical strength, especially upper body. Agility is also a key component of playing rugby with both the feet and hands required to make sudden changes. Rugby is also great for building your cardio, helping build a stronger heart and lungs, helping to deliver oxygen to your muscles faster.

There are also mental health benefits including reduced stress, improved discipline, and increased self-confidence. Playing in a team is also a great way to get out and socialise.

Did you know?

  • The nearby town of Huddersfield is the birthplace of the game of rugby league.
  • The sport of rugby union is named after Rugby School, where the game was first played. The game is said to have been invented in 1823 when William Webb Ellis caught the ball while playing a game of football at school, and ran to the goal with it.
  • The same whistle is used to kick off the opening game of every Rugby World Cup tournament. It is the Gil Evans whistle and was first blown by Gil Evans, the Welsh referee overseeing a match between England and New Zealand in 1905.
